Ireland End to End Day 7 Westport to Sligo

Three days left on our incredible journey! Gently undulating today but a long day in the saddle cycling 71 miles along mostly quiet country roads. We started a little later to accommodate an early lunch stop which meant there was plenty of time for a few hearty souls to take a quick dip at a pier in Westport

              Happy Birthday, Tony!!

Ireland is,divided into 32 counties, with 26 in the Republic of Ireland and 6 in Northern Ireland. We started in Cork, then moved into Kerry before taking a ferry into Clare. Then on to Galway, Mayo and today into Sligo. The Irish are very patriotic and many have their county flag hanging up outside their properties,

The curse of County Mayo

County Mayo last won the All Ireland Gaelic football competition in 1951. It was their 2nd successive win. Celebrating their win, they failed to show respects when they came across a funeral procession. The priest pronounced that as long as all taking part in celebrations lived, that Mayo would not win another championship. 11 times Mayo have reached the final since their last victory and 11 times they have failed to win. The last remaining member of the successful team passed away in 2023. Mayo have qualified again for the final this year so perhaps they may upset the favourites,Kerry.
